Birds of a Feather
Lake laps the shore,
sun halo diamonds dance,
a call for me.
Awkward girl unsure
is made certain by
the water's calm.
First feet,
then body, slip
below and I am a mermaid.
Reassured, this is
my world.
As I emerge, a Canada goose glides over
me.
Flaps until her wingtips break
the water's surface and
lands.
I look at her.
She looks at me.
She has no flock.
Alone.
I dive.
She follows.
Back and forth I paddle,
she stays by my side.
The afternoon, our conversation.
The lake, our understanding.
And as I retreat to the beach,
she waddles behind me.
Overhead a flock honks
and she must go.
Left with a feather,
a reminder that this is
our place.

Simply gorgeous. I can't get enough of your poetry. How about some Swagger note cards with some of your quotes on them? Would love it!

Thanks, Jon. I am so so so going to miss you, too!
DeleteWhat beautiful images to evoke an emotional inter-species connection! Poetry is about words, images, & emotions, & you, Gina, are the master poet.
ReplyDeleteComing from the master story spinner I am humbled. Thank you, Kathy!
DeleteLovely, lovely Gina. My daughter has a similar experience, a swan in Lake Geneva swam with her for the longest time one afternoon. Swans can be treatening but this one was happy for the company. Couldn't stop taking photos. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Veronica. It was a very cool experience and that's amazing that your daughter had a swan swim with her.
DeleteReally picturesque and quite lovely.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Margaret.
