I'm over at Carol Baldwin's blog today. Please drop by

This week I've stepped back in time--returning to summer camp. A magical time when I was empowered by campfire skits, games and challenges, and making friends out of strangers. I can't be the only one.
Here's a taste of what we've done so far at Girl Scout art camp.
|
Cooked hobo pies over coals. |
|
Scooped out an orange and added cake mix, cooked then frosted, for a tangy dessert. |
|
Pressed fallen leaves into fabric paint to create these nature t-shirts. |
|
Acted out stories. |
|
Played games. |
|
Designed covers for our journals that we draw our activities in. |
|
Designed tote bags. |
What's your fondest camping memory?
Love the camping pictures! It reminds me when I went to Girl Scout Camp years ago. And I love those leaf shirts!
ReplyDeleteFondest camping memories: tie dyed shirts, smores, banana boats, & jumping on the trampoline. Least favorite memories: coming home with chickenpox at age 13 and falling off the high dive ladder. Fortunately I was not hurt from the fall and went back up to jump off immediately with my brother following behind me on the steps so I didn't fall again. The leaf shirts are awesome!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if kids can even jump on trampolines at summer camp anymore? The liability and all. Like back in the days when high diving boards were normal and now they've disappeared. What a great memory of your brother following you up the ladder after your mishap! That speaks volumes about him. Did you ever find out how many other kids got sent home with chicken pox too?
Deletemy favorite camp memory would be my first trip to Camp Sugarbush when one of my friends misread the direction signs and got all excited that we'd have a chance to ride the French trains...the sign said latrines, not "la trains"!!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd then she visited the latrines and realized they smelled worse than Pepe Le Pew!

ReplyDeleteThat sounds fun. I only went to camp once but I made a lot of new friends. Of course we lost touch a few years later.
ReplyDeleteI never went to Girl Scout camp. I think I missed out. Looks like fun!
ReplyDeleteNever been camping, ever. But this looks like a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteI didn't make it through Brownies, but I was a leader for my daughter's troop for 4 years. Had a blast! My favorite camp memory was taking the girls for their first outdoor adventure and collecting leaves to make paint prints. Good times!
ReplyDeleteI have so many fond memories of camping with Girl Scouts.....both as a girl and now as a leader. We have so much fun as we try new things without boys to make fun of us. I have 3 sons who can do everything. It's nice to try things without them hovering. My favorite memory has to be the time my daughter took me by the hand and looked at me with love that I could feel. With all of the technology kids have these days, it's nice to have camp to help get their attention so we can focus on what is really important. Campfires, icky spiders, and time spent with each other.
ReplyDeleteAmen!
DeleteGreat photos. That dessert is a super idea, I bet the kids loved it.
ReplyDeleteI never went to any kind of summer camp, but during my teens, I spent a couple delicious weeks each summer camping down the ocean (in Delaware) with extended family. Lots and lots of good memories associated with those times. Like my cousins and me playing cards in the tent during a torrential downpour... playing our guitars and singing around the campfire most nights... fishing, crabbing, clamming. But I don't think we ever made s'mores. (They probably weren't invented yet!)
ReplyDeletegreat pictures, Kim. You look like you're having a great time! Thanks for sending your readers in my direction. Make sure you look at all their comments!
ReplyDeleteWe got some good ones, didn't we? Thanks for inviting me over for the day!
DeleteI've only camped as an adult. Positively loved the sound of rain tinkling on the canvas tent roof, early morning chatter of birds, rustle of sleeping bags, food sizzling over the campfire ... oh my, the list is endless. Love it!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a 7th-grader, our scout troop performed West Side Story at camp. Such fun! Enjoyed your guest blog post.
ReplyDeleteOf course you would enjoy interpreting and performing a good story! Thanks, Kathy!
DeleteI've only been camping 3 times. Last time I went with my family we really enjoyed geocaching through the woods!
ReplyDeleteLetterboxing is a great activity to keep the kids interested in hiking too! It's geocaching without the GPS--just visual and directional clues.
DeleteI've never been camping. Something I have to get around to in the future!
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures.
I'll never forget Girl Scout camp. 1971. Tie dye, making bright orange stadium cushions...and of course the smores!
ReplyDeleteThis post sparked so many fond memories I have of summer camp when I was about 12 years old. We did all kinds of things from archery to horse back riding, crafts to singing by the camp fires. Thanks for the trip down memory lane... (:
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! We are headed to New Hampshire soon and I'm looking forward to toasting marshmallows with the kids.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite childhood camp memory was getting along with my brother. We fought terribly, but somehow on vacation, things worked out better.
